The 9 Primary Training,

Maryhill barracks Glasgow has long since been demolished and is now the Wynford housing estate picture date is unknown by looking at streetlights it could possibly be the late 1950s.or early 60s.

It was here that George started his 6 weeks basic army training. As with all recruits this is a trying time in their lives as they are introduced to a military environment along with all the do’s and do not's of this new complicated life that they suddenly find thrust upon them. They have so much to learn and master in such a short time and if they start to falter or fail in mastering the techniques being taught or have injuries that stop them from continuing with their squad all of whom they will have bonded with, they will be back squaded. Then they have the agitation and upset of having to join the next intake and start the process from the beginning again! At the end of this process, they are absorbed into the army life they can now clean, polish, bull boots, have learnt the history of the army and now drill as a one and be fitter than they have ever been. After their pass out parade, they are given the joining instructions of the next phase of their training and the regiments that will be joining.

George had requested if he could join the Durham Light Infantry at his attestation, he was granted this request and is to be posted to the DLI.
