As George's demobilisation from the Army was only 11 months away and if you deduct his leave owing along with demob leave off it was approximately 9 months then add to this some 2 months travelling by boat the reality is he probably had closer to 7 months service left.
This was very much on his mind on how he was to begin his new life as a civilian and he desperately wanted to clear his decks of all the marriage problems and take back custody of his son into his life and find a real job with prospects. His letters home to his father show that life outside of the army was his priority, the main reason for completing the clerks qualification was that as a qualified Clerk he now had profession that would be in demand in London where his family were based.
He knew he could probably lodge with his parents but this was not what he really wanted, his aim was to be independent from the family as his brother and sister were, it was some 7 years since he lived with his father and his wife and he was far too much an independent person now to do that, but he may have to for a short while whilst he found a job! His next priority was to get his divorce completed as soon as he could, he was contemplating if there was a way that he could do this whilst in the army he was thinking along the lines of having a heart to heart with the padre with a view to compassionate leave. Regrettable George never got round to carrying this out.
A point to note is that George was a qualified Clerk fully certified in his pay book, yet he was still employed as an infantryman and in the front line. When he should have been re-mustered to the RASC [Royal Army Service Corps] He should also have now been paid as a a Clerk which was a pound or so more a week?

Georges pay book states he is a tradesman,
