What's in the name?

They simply identify a person, or a group, a family, an employment, a tradesman, or a form of identification that identified someone. It distinguishes what they are known as or called  that could be implemented into ownership control and legal dealings. Which  makes names in use today all inherited names!

These names fall into many categories a few listed below:

The individual [Personal names]

The group of individuals [Names which are relevant as to where they lived or what they  did]

The property of an individual [Collective names that were given to individuals by their owner, sects, institutions, etc.]

The list goes on but they all signify the same thing that the person can be identified, in conversation and  in attesting the truth of some statement or event or record

Type of names

We now know names as first names and last names some known as Christian name and surname.

Names

What are they and what do they mean?

Names and what they mean  is an interest that I have had for the last 45 years I will  try to explain some of the answers to some of the questions listed above and  a few more as this is one of my pet topics I am bound to diversify!

I would like to just clarify at this point that the meanings of names are not in any way to be attributed to Genealogy [family history]. There can be no linkage from the meaning of a surname to your family history.
